Vic ICT for Women Round Table Networking Lunch- 29th August 2008.

Sponsored by Ballarat ICT

Ballarat ICT Cluster recently sponsored 8 students, who are studying ICT related courses, to attend a “Round-Table Networking” lunch in Melbourne. At this lunch the students met and lunched with women from the Victorian ICT for Women Network, who are currently working in ICT.

The Round-Table lunch was held on Friday 29th August, 2008, and proved to be a great opportunity for these students to network with experienced women in the ICT industry.

This networking opportunity allowed these determined individuals to meet some of the ICT industry’s most accomplished women and get an insight into what is required to have a successful career in Information Communications and Technology.

Many students made contacts on the day and received valuable information about different ICT careers, what the issues are in the real ICT working environment, and the benefits of focussing on education.

Students met a variety of ICT Industry employees from ICT Managers to Business Analysts. Discussions were lively with topics covered such as; the tasks performed in particular roles, where you start in a company, and the types of hours worked. The students were told of the types of tasks you are given as a junior; how you are given projects with limited scope and build up slowly, and how there is someone to help you the whole way.

Students also met ladies who were mothers returning to work, younger women returning to study and women wanting to re-educate themselves in a different area of work.

Students found the lunch very beneficial saying that if helped to bridge the gap between studying and working by giving an insight into the processes you need to go through to get where these women currently are. A student also commented on the simple benefit of just talking on the train with the female students from University of Ballarat about where their futures may take them.

University of Ballarat, School of ITMS students in attendance at the lunch were:
Sharon Lavey
Ranisha Fernando
Karine Russell
Jing Zhao
Jacinta Reid
Simin Mirhaghy Saatchi
Sae Ra Germaine
Julie Ross
