Marketing and Advocacy
The City has taken a collaborative/leadership role in the Regional Cities Victoria Initiative in developing a Victoria-wide approach to tackling the need for greater broadband and communications infrastructure within regional Victoria.
Specific NBN initiatives in Ballarat include collaborative work between Ballarat ICT and the University of Ballarat in exploring training and workforce initiatives to assist with and compliment the NBN rollout, providing regular technical and commercial updates in terms of the NBN's progress. Ballarat ICT is also a member of the Communications Alliance which in turn is playing a key role in developing technical specifications for NBN installations.
The City of Ballarat Council and the University of Ballarat are working in tandem to ensure there is an ongoing investment in supporting information and communications infrastructure. The major focus of infrastructure investment is the University of Ballarat Technology Park. Established in 1995, there has been ongoing investment in optic fibre to enable the large and small technology-based enterprises to prosper and thrive.
The University and the City are currently considering a two-pronged strategy for further expansion of the Park. The University embarked upon a master planning process, with the support of the City, with a focus on 30 hectares of land to the north of the Park. This will be a long term (15 year) project and provides the potential to increase ICT employment in the precinct from 1,400 people to about 4,000.
It is projected this development will have the following impacts:
- Economic outputs (direct/flow on) = $1b per annum
- Value added (direct/flow on) = $479m per annum
- Household Income (direct/flow on) = $306m per annum
The second strategy the University is currently considering is one which enables the Technology Park to expand to the east, and to acquire approximately 15 hectares of land of University land (from the Mt Helen Campus). It is projected this development would generate another 2,000 ICT jobs. Planning has already begun in relation to this option, and its expected the construction of roads and services will be evidenced within the next 6 months.
